Do we judge humans and machines equally? Or are our judgments biased depending on who or what is performing an action?
Dozens of experiments have been carried out to compare people's judgments of humans and machines across a variety of situations: from algorithmic bias in hiring decisions, and from autonomous weapons to self-driving vehicles and labor displacement.
These experiments were used to explore how people's bias varies with a scenario's moral dimensions and with the demographic characteristics of those evaluating them. Together, these results provide a fine-grained understanding of when we are biased in favor or against machines, and what are the factors that help explain these biases.
To hear more, we’re delighted to announce that César A. Hidalgo will be headlining at World Summit AI Americas in Montreal this March to discuss his new book ‘How Humans Judge Machines’.
César is a physicist, author, and entrepreneur who has been described as Chilean by birth, Spanish by inheritance & American by choice! He holds an ANITI Chair at the University of Toulouse, an Honorary Professorship at the University of Manchester, and is a visiting Professor at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Hidalgo is also a founder of Datawheel, a data visualization and distribution company. Prior to joining the University of Toulouse, he was a professor at MIT where he directed the Collective Learning group.
