Ahead of World Summit AI (11th-12th October 2023, Taets Art & Event Park, Amsterdam), we asked Dr. Terry L. Janssen, QMI Founder, Quantum Technology, AI / Machine Learning & Engineering, The Quantum Science Organization, his thoughts on the future of AI.
As an expert in the field, what critical challenges do you believe the AI community needs to address to ensure responsible & and ethical AI deployment?
Best if we learn how to make AI monitor itself for detecting unethical/unresponsible behavior, and we oversee it.
How has AI impacted your specific field of expertise, and what transformative changes do you foresee in the near future?
Generative (GenAI) seems to be having the most impact in my field, and I think it will for the foreseeable future. Of course overall for society, it is predictive AI that has the most profound impact to date.
How do you envision AI shaping various industries, and what advice would you give to businesses seeking to integrate AI into their operations?
Science and medicine is my primary focus now.
My recommendation to businesses of substantial size: create a Chief AI Officer role and hire the best.
In your opinion, what opportunities and challenges does AI present for job markets and workforce development worldwide?
For me it has been in curating knowledge for the Quantum Science and Brain Science Initiatives that I lead.
What measures do you believe should be taken to bridge the AI research gap between developed and developing nations to ensure equitable technological progress?
Digital democratization is happening rapidly, and this is very good. We need to expand outreach to underprivileged countries and assure they have access to resources to prosper with all technology including AI.
What 2 people do you admire most in the world of AI in terms of their work?
Had to pick just two, but I'll go with Drs. Newell and Simon of CMU since they had the most influence on my early career.
What advice would you give to aspiring AI researchers and enthusiasts who want to make a positive impact in the field?
Press forward
don't let setbacks slow you down.
If you could solve any global problem in the world with AI, what would it be and why?
Alzheimer's disease. I am dedicating time and resources to finding the cause and cure via the Brain Science Organization I co-founded.
What inspired you to participate in this AI summit as a speaker, and what message do you hope to convey to the audience?
The opportunity to bring quantum information science into the agenda, by giving the talk "Deep Dive into a Quantum Machine Learning algorithm."
