Exploring the future of AI with Andreea Munteanu, Product Manager, Canonical

Written by World Summit AI | Oct 3, 2023 11:52:06 AM

Ahead of World Summit AI (11th-12th October 2023, Taets Art & Event Park, Amsterdam), we asked Andreea Munteanu, Product Manager, Canonical, her thoughts on the future of AI.

As an expert in the field, what critical challenges do you believe the AI community needs to address to ensure responsible & and ethical AI deployment?

AI world needs to better define guidance on how to build AI projects that are ethical and responsible. Also, the community could explore more the option of enabling sustainable AI.

How has AI impacted your specific field of expertise, and what transformative changes do you foresee in the near future?

AI is constantly changing the way that I work - with more powerful tools to work efficiently as a product manager and more performant models to play with as a data scientist. The future of AI will lead to more subject matter experts who are AI specialists who deeply understand an industry and can articulate easily the use cases that it has.

How do you envision AI shaping various industries, and what advice would you give to businesses seeking to integrate AI into their operations?

AI will change all industries and everyone's life. Before kick starting your AI journey, as a company, I encourage you to clearly define the problems that you are trying to solve.

In your opinion, what opportunities and challenges does AI present for job markets and workforce development worldwide?

AI is making a shift in many job markets, taking away the burden of repetitive tasks and giving professionals time to focus on more meaningful activities. It translates into more creative results, more innovative solutions and better return use of people's expertise.

Can you share an example of an AI application or project that has personally impressed you, and explain why it stands out?

Recently, I have learned that University of Tasmania is using AI/ML to improve the time spent on space tracking. It is incredible to see how the latest technologies are touching all industries.

What measures do you believe should be taken to bridge the AI research gap between developed and developing nations to ensure equitable technological progress?

I actually think that naturally AI is bridging the gap, by having so many open source projects where people from both developed and developing countries are contributing. Plenty of countries that historically have not been active in the tech world have a thriving data science or AI community, which is constantly growing. However, access to power compute would be an enabler and having GPU more accessible would ease everyone's life.

What 2 people do you admire most in the world of AI in terms of their work?

Whereas Jensen Huang is a visionary in the AI world, natu lauchande is an inspiring leader that makes AI available to humanity by educating how to use leading open source ML tools.

What advice would you give to aspiring AI researchers and enthusiasts who want to make a positive impact in the field?

I will say the same that I told enterprises - start with a problem. Whereas AI is cool, doing AI for the sake of it doesn't make any difference. Additionally, do not shy away from contributing to open source projects that are enabling AI.

If you could solve any global problem in the world with AI, what would it be and why?

I am a strong believer in education as the solution to every problem that the world truly has, so I would democratise education and give everyone access to the same level of education.

Additionally, I am an avid diver, so I would use AI to better predict and preserve marine life.

What inspired you to participate in this AI summit as a speaker, and what message do you hope to convey to the audience?

World Summit AI is a forum of experts who are shaping the future of AI, so as someone who is actively working in the field, it felt natural to aim to be there. For everyone interested in the domain, I would like to simply say that you can also innovate at speed with open source AI.
