Several news sources have cited the new Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma as the "most important documentary of our times" (The Independent). Released just over a week ago, the documentary has caused waves in a number of different circles, ranging from scrutiny of the surveillance capitalism to which we are all seemingly indifferent (The Guardian) to whether the documentary really addresses some of the biggest issues in big tech (Slate).

Today, machine learning models are frequently applied to guide decisions in areas such as assessing candidate risk in loan applications. Suddenly, a computer’s decisions have become far more than simply which films we’re most likely to enjoy. However, we often find that increasingly complex machine learning models lack ‘explainability’ — the professionals depending on them can’t interpret them.

I don’t know how to fly an aeroplane, but I still travel by air when I need to, with the plane primarily being flown by a computer programme and with minimal human intervention. I trust the system, processes, procedures in place, and the people who designed the system.

When it comes to embracing AI and other advanced technologies, ethical leadership will consider the diverse needs and requirements of a variety of different stakeholder groups. This includes not only customers and employees, but citizens and wider society, as well as the more traditional groups, such as investors.
